Saša Živković: System Mandala, In situ Installation, 2014

My project System Mandala is dedicated to Vjenceslav Richter, member of art group Exat 51. This avant-garde group changed the art scene in Socialist Yugoslavia dominated by the socialist realism doctrine. The first part of this work was realized in Barrel Gallery, Home of Croatian Association of Artist in Zagreb, December 2011. My goal is to connect tradition of Tibetan Buddhist painting and contemporary art. Tibetan mandala and Folie are temporary objects, one is made for a ritual purpose and the other primarily for decoration. I transferred the work of Vjenceslav Richter into the media of mandala, recreating a traditional form of art into the contemporary praxis. Saint Donat’s church was created on the site of a Roman forum using elements of the ruins as construction materials but also decorative ones. l will construct System mandala as a temporary object of cultural memory.
